How To Make A Tech Deck Park

A large , heavy 600mm f4.0 telephoto lens to take in your hand luggage into the aircraft

The trip to Namibia was indeed the first flight when I took the thick and 600. I've previously at Air Namibia asked whether there are also special rules for photo equipment, but nada. They have given me a flat refusal. There are only special conditions for hunting and golf equipment. And as golf equipment that would then not have gone off.

Well, given that all tripods and other equipment already on the magical-20kg limit was, so I have all the lenses and the two bodies in my Ortliebrucksack packed and just hoped to get through it. It looks visually not quite as large. The large lens stretcher I stuffed with clothes and put in the big suitcase. And clamped the laptop under his arm.

To our surprise, the Air Namibia has no one cares for our excess baggage. The quantity and weight of hand baggage (with me was the 15kg yes even) because no one has bothered. Gosh, we've probably been lucky. The plane was also quite empty.

Only by the hand baggage check, it was somewhat time consuming. Since I had to unpack the whole pack for the 600 for an explosives check to pull out. "This will go on forever" me the nice security guard said. "We see only one of a large piece of metal. With the small lenses because we do not usually, but with such a large lens in any case always."

And then he gave me still says, "Well, if you placed the lens in a case, they would also open up again the need that would then really become even more stressful.." not a good idea into a large telephoto lens is to give up in the suitcase. Zmindest when flying from Germany. On departure in Namibia which has in turn not interested because they did not even look in the backpack.

For me it is the effort in any case worthwhile, even if it was a terrible smuggling. At least I'm on the trip over 2 / 3 of the photos taken with the 600 and there is a lot of motives to me it would not with a shorter focal length so successful, I think. But my best friend and travel partner, I'm still so envious of a couple of times to be "small" 100-400 f5.6.
